Little s p a c e is t a k e n u p in d i s c u s s i n g t h e h i s t o r y a n d b a c k g r o u n d of p o l l u t i o n p r o b l e m s , t h e n a t u r e a n d effects ( m a t e r i a l a n d to health) of p o l l u t a n t s ; t h e s e m a t t e r s are referred to o n l y in so far as is essential to t h e a u t h o r ' s m a i n p u r p o s e - - t h e p r o d u c t i o n of a t e x t b o o k a n d guide for public h e a l t h inspectors, i n d u s trialists a n d o t h e r s w h o s e d u t y a n d i n t e r e s t it is to reduce air p o l l u t i o n a n d its evils to t h e lowest possible levels. T h i s is a large book; its 514 p a g e s are p a c k e d w i t h i n f o r m a t i o n w h i c h s h o u l d b e of use to t h o s e concerned w i t h s u c h m a t t e r s as fuels a n d t h e i r c o m b u s t i o n a n d it could w i t h s o m e a d v a n t a g e be used c o m p l e m e n t a r i l y to m o r e general books on t h e s e subjects. The author has avowedly written with the n e e d s of P u b l i c H e a l t h I n s p e c t o r s (the a u t h o r was f o r m e r l y a Chief P . H . I . ) a n d o t h e r local g o v e r n m e n t officers in m i n d . S o m e of these, d e p e n d e n t on t h e n a t u r e a n d scope of t h e i r previous t e c h n i c a l b a c k g r o u n d , m a y find p a r t s of t h e b o o k r a t h e r h a r d going a n d p o s s i b l y s o m e of it a little s u r p l u s to t h e i r probable r e q u i r e m e n t s . T h e r e is no d o u b t , h o w e v e r , t h a t a c o n s c i e n t i o u s s t u d y of t h i s t e x t s h o u l d fit t h e m , a n d others, to t a c k l e m o s t of t h e p r o b l e m s w h i c h t h e y m a y h a v e to face. T h e i m p o r t a n c e of t h e s u b j e c t is sufficient justification for t h e effort. T h e b o o k is d i v i d e d into f o u r m a i n sections a n d t h e s u b j e c t m a t t e r is t r e a t e d s y s t e m a t i c a l l y in each. A short, i n t r o d u c t o r y a n d general P a r t 1 is followed b y 200 pages on f u r n a c e s , fuels a n d firing m e t h o d s . P a r t 3 ( a b o u t 160 pages) deals in s o m e detail w i t h t h e practical a p p l i c a t i o n of t h e Clean Air Act. Here t h e a u t h o r discusses s u c h s u b j e c t s as r a i l w a y s , collieries, c h i m n e y h e i g h t s a n d s m o k e control areas. A c h a p t e r on d o m e s t i c a p p l i a n c e s includes practical i n s t r u c t i o n s on t h e fitting or c o n v e r s i o n of d o m e s t i c solid fuel grates. T h e b o o k is v e r y well printed, p r o d u c e d a n d illust r a t e d . T h e general i n d e x is good, a l t h o u g h t h e reviewer a h v a y s regrets t h e o m i s s i o n of a n a u t h o r i n d e x w h e n t h i s is n o t p r o v i d e d . T h e p o i n t s on w h i c h t e c h n i c a l o b j e c t i o n m a y be t a k e n are few. I n subseq u e n t editions it m i g h t be well to re-write the para. g r a p h on distillation on page 158, while, a t t h e b o t t o m of t h e s a m e page is t h e s u r p r i s i n g implication t h a t s u l p h u r occurs in p e t r o l e u m oils in t h e e l e m e n t a l f o r m r a t h e r t h a n (as it does) in t h e f o r m of s u l p h u r c o m o o u n d s . T h e b l e m i s h e s are, h o w e v e r , s m a l l a n d in t h e rev i e w e r ' s opinion t h e b o o k is e x c e l l e n t b o t h as a

As it is t h e o n l y a d e q u a t e s u r v e y is t h a t on d u c t flows b y HALL a n d SUTTON. P a p e r s are i n c l u d e d on t h e classical p r o b l e m s of t r a n s s o n i c flow; s u p e r s o n i c flow p a s t a bluff b o d y , flow t h r o u g h t h e Condi nozzle a n d flow over a n aero foil a t h i g h s u b s o n i c M a c h n u m b e r s t o g e t h e r w i t h p a p e r s on v a r i o u s t h r e e - d i m e n s i o n a l effects. B o t h p a p e r s deal w i t h aligned m a g n e t i c a n d velocity fields in a perfectly c o n d u c t i n g gas a n d indicate t h e e x t r e m e care w h i c h m u s t be t a k e n in posing a n d s o l v i n g t h e s i m p l e s t p r o b l e m s in t h i s field. T h e a p p l i c a t i o n of t h e h o d o g r a p h m e t h o d c o n t i n u e s to be a m a j o r tool in t h e field. T h e reviewer feels t h a t t h e m o r e i n t e r e s t i n g a d v a n c e s in t h i s s u b j e c t are n o t in t h e f u r t h e r d e v e l o p m e n t of t h e h o d o g r a p h m e t h o d a n d was e n c o u r a g e d b y t h e i n c r e a s i n g divers i t y of a p p r o a c h e s to be found; for e x a m p l e , t h e a p p l i c a t i o n of t h e m e t h o d of integral relations b y }~OLT to t h e Condi nozzle 0 r o b l e m , GARABEDION'S m e t h o d for t h e bluff b o d y in s u p e r s o n i c flow a n d T~YLO~'S a n a l y s i s for t h e aerofoil p r o b l e m w h i c h promises a reliable m e t h o d of p r e d i c t i n g t h e s h o c k strength terminating a supersonic patch. I t is u n f o r t u n a t e t h a t GARABEDION'S p a p e r o n l y a p p e a r s in a b s t r a c t ; it is essential t h a t t h e s u b j e c t m a t t e r of a p a p e r s h o u l d a p p e a r in full if t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of a book of this t y p e is to be w o r t h w h i l e . O n t h e p r a c t i c a l side e x p e r i m e n t s on cones of v a r i o u s cross s e c t i o n are described b y KUCHEMAN, a n d LOCK r e p o r t s his e x p e r i m e n t s on s w e p t wing b o d y c o m b i n a t i o n s ; b o t h topics b e i n g a r e m i n d e r t h a t c a l c u l a t i o n a l t e c h n i q u e s in theoretical fluid m e c h a n i c s m a y still be i m p r o v e d to a d v a n t a g e . PEARCEY'S p a p e r on t h e design of t r a n s s o n i c w i n g s is 242
