OBITUARY Edward Dempsey, BSc, PhD It is with great sadness that we r e p o r t the s u d d e n death o f E d w a r d (Ted) Dempsey on 25 July 1991. T e d g r a d u a t e d in 1952 with first class h o n o r s in natural philosophy and in 1955 with a PhD in theoretical physics f r o m St. Andrews University. H e spent the next five years at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, b e f o r e taking u p a post at Uhion Carbide Research Institute, T a r r y t o w n , NY, USA, as a research physicist in 1960. In 1964 he j o i n e d the Mobil R&D C o r p o r a t i o n in their Princeton Laboratories, NJ, USA, as a senior research scientist to work on zeolite catalysts. H e rapidly progressed until, in 1968, he became head o f the Physics section. About this time he began publishing papers that are still r e g a r d e d as classics in their field and still q u o t e d frequently in the zeolite literature. T h e s e papers, in collaboration with D.H. Olson, G.H. Kuehl and G.T. Kerr, predicted that the distribution o f Si and Al atoms in zeolites X and Y is o r d e r e d and described the n a t u r e o f this distribution as a function o f Si/A1 ratio. T h e s e predictions were c o n f i r m e d in 1980 by M A S n.m.r.

In 1970 T e d and his family r e t u r n e d to the U K and in 1971 he j o i n e d the Ministry o f Defence. F r o m then until his early r e t i r e m e n t in 1991 he was involved in the d e v e l o p m e n t o f c o m p u t e r models for the British Army. T e d always maintained a great interest in zeolites d u r i n g his twenty years at the MOD. H e was a consultant for L a p o r t e Industries for many years and a t t e n d e d m a n y BZA- and IZA-sponsored conferences. O n his r e t i r e m e n t f r o m the MOD he expressed a strong desire to start up some theoretical studies on zeolites at Imperial College. I was delighted to invite him to join my g r o u p . It was a great shock and very sad loss to zeolite research when he suddenly died o f a heart attack just as these a r r a n g e m e n t s had been finalized. T h e whole o f the Zeolite fraternity send their condolences to his wife, Aileen, and his son and daughter.
