compounds RTP Company has introduced a new range of flame retardant compounds containing long glass fibre. The company says that these materials are available at 30% and 40% by weight glass levels in polypropylene and nylon 6. They are claimed to improve significantly tensile strength, flexural strength, impact and dimensional stability compared with similar short glass fibre compounds. UL certification of

V-0 at 1.59mm (1/16 inch) can be achieved for both compounds. Applications for the new compounds will include instances where flame retardancy is required as well as the strength of long fibre compounds. These indude industrial fan shrouds, components in electrical and consumer goods, and power tool brackets or housing. RTP Company adds that replacing short glass fibre nylon

compounds with long fibre polypropylene compounds can make economic sense: The polypropylene compounds reduce weight by 10%, reduce costs by 27%, and maintain or improve mechanical properties due to lower specific gravities and material costs.
