A l t h o u g h l i t t l e a t t e m p t h a s b e e n m a d e t o classify t h e v a r i o u s t o p i c s c o v e r e d b y t h e p a p e r s , t h e p r e s e n t a t i o n of s h o r t a b s t r a c t s for e a c h p a p e r i n t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n t o e a c h v o l u m e e n s u r e s a m i n i m u m of f r u s t r a t i o n t o t h e r e a d e r . T h e r e are t w o g e n e r a l o b s e r v a t i o n s w h i c h m i g h t b e m a d e a b o u t t h e c o n t e n t of t h e s e v o l u m e s . I n v o l u m e 15, w h i c h w a s p r o d u c e d t o c o m m e m o r a t e t h e s e v e n t i e t h b i r t h d a y of P r o f e s s o r M. M. K h r u s h c h o v , o n e is s o m e w h a t s u r p r i s e d b y t h e m e a g r e t e c h n i c a l significance of s o m e of t h e c o n t r i b u t i o n s . S o m e of t h e p a p e r s c o u l d b e d e s c r i b e d as t e c h n i c a l n o t e s p r o v i d i n g a few e x p e r i m e n t a l r e s u l t s of t e s t s o n specific m a c h i n e c o m p o n e n t s . I n d e e d , t h r o u g h o u t t h e w h o l e of t h e s e v o l u m e s o n e is a w a r e of a n o t a b l e a b s e n c e o f p a p e r s describing related theoretical and experimental studies of wear situations. Although this is p r o b a b l y a v a l i d c r i t i c i s m of m u c h of t h e w o r k c a r r i e d o u t in t h i s field b y i n v e s t i g a t o r s in g e n e r a l t h i s v o i d is n o n e t h e less r e g r e t t a b l e . O f t h e t h e o r e t i c a l s t u d i e s t h i s r e v i e w e r feels t h a t t h e p a p e r s o n e l a s t o - r h e o l o g y a n d t h e h y d r o d y n a m i c l u b r i c a t i o n of p o r o u s b e a r i n g s offer t h e b e s t t a k e - o f f p o i n t s for f u r t h e r work. W h i l s t t h e s e v o l u m e s will o b v i o u s l y b e of i n t e r e s t t o r e s e a r c h w o r k e r s in t h i s field, it is also likely t h a t t h e p r a c t i s i n g e n g i n e e r will find m u c h useful e x p e r i m e n t a l i n f o r m a t i o n w h i c h is d i r e c t l y a p p l i c a b l e t o his d a y - t o - d a y c o n f r o n t a t i o n w i t h f r i c t i o n a n d w e a r in machinery.
