Antimicrobial masterbatch for polypropylene chairs Performance Masterbatches (PMB) and antimicrobial additive producer SteriTouch Ltd have developed an antimicrobial masterbatch for use in a range of polypropylene (PP) chairs, designed for the contract, education and residential markets by UK-based Origin Furniture. The SteriTouch masterbatch incorporates silver to provide antimicrobial protection against contamination from bacteria such as MRSA, E. Coli and Salmonella. It provides protection for the lifetime of the product and can be added to the natural polymer at normal let-down rates or combined with a colorant masterbatch. In tests, results showed that there was up to a 99.9% reduction in the population of bacteria in tests against both MRSA and E. The ‘POP’ chair is available in a large selection of colours, including red, blue, lime and orange, which were all matched by PMB.

Improved long-fibre thermoplastic compounds PolyOne Corporation has developed OnForce™ LFT, a new range of long-fibre thermoplastic compounds which can retain their performance and properties across a temperature range from -20°C to 160°C. They also have improved creep and fatigue performance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and surface finish when compared

to highly filled short-fibre products as well as other long-fibre thermoplastics, the company says. PolyOne’s compounds are currently available in a range of base polymer/ reinforcement combinations including polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA) 66, and thermoplastic urethane (TPU) resins combined with glass and/or carbon fibres.

They are also available with specialized fibre loading levels, customized stabilization and additive packages and custom colours. Several grades now in development are based on engineering resins such as polypropylene adipate (PPA) and polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) for higher heat applications. The compounds can be processed on standard injection moulding machines.
