of New York at Buffalo, New York 14214, U.S.A. Spatially dependent electron relaxation near a thermionie emitting electrode: Energy Conversion 13, 41-47 (1973). Snmmary--The spatially dependent relaxation phenomena in thermionic converters are investigated by a solution of the Boltzrnann equation for free electrons and the rate equations for bound electronic states. The analysis given here shows that the electron distribution function during the relaxation can be described by two Maxwellian groups which eventually merge into one Maxwellian function. The rate of Maxwellization depends on electronelectron Coulomb and electron-neutral inelastic collision frequencies and is strongly coupled to the rate of relaxation of the bound-electron population toward Boltzmann equilibrium. Good agreement is found between the present theory and the available experimental data measured by the use of probe and spectroscopic techniques.

Investigations on CdTe thin film solar cells: Energy Conversion 13, 53-56 (1973). Summary--CdTe films were deposited by vacuum evaporation of the elements Cd and Te and annealed in Cd vapour. For fabrication of thin film solar cells with a p-CuaTen-CdTe heterojunction they were dipped in a Cu+-ion solution. The influence of film thickness, substrate temperature, crystallite orientation, interfaces and etching the CdTe films was studied. Investigations of Cu mesh collector grids with various metal coatings yielded better efficienciesfor palladium coated grids than for gold plated grids. An even better efficiency gave rhenium coated grids, but only after a reduction of the rhenium oxides. Some investigations into the long time behaviour conclude this work.

Technical alternatives for energy management: Energy Conversion 13, 57-65 (1973). Summary--The current energy management situation is presented in terms of the aspects limiting present practice. The conversion technologies available and being developed for the production of energy forms suitable for consumption from basic resources are summarized as technical alternatives. Options for continuing present trends in benefits of energy utilization include: development of processes to use new energy sources (U-238, Th-232, deuterium, gasified coal, geothermal and solar), more efficient power generation from present fuels (topping cycles, MHD and higher temperature gas turbines), and more efficient utilization of energy and power in the consumption process. All of these alternatives require substantial investment in capital resources, engineering of products and systems with long term performance in mind and more comprehensive planning of the entire energy utilization process.
