R1 is a d i v a l e n t C i - C 5 a l l p h a t i c g r o u p , or a n a r o m a t i c g r o u p ; R2 a n d R3 a r e m o n o v a l e n t aliphatic groups which may be the same or different from one another; m can take any value from 1-100. Efficient electrochemical motor T h i s d e v i c e u s e s h y d r o g e n g a s in a g a s - t i g h t p u m p h o u s i n g to c o n v e r t e l e c t r i c a l e n e r g y to mechanical work. The motor c o n s i s t s of a n e l e c t r o l y t i c membrane which has porous e l e c t r o d e s o n e i t h e r face. H y d r o g e n gas, w h i c h is e l e c t r o c h e m i c a l l y active, undergoes an anodic reaction on o n e s i d e of t h e m e m b r a n e . It is converted into ions which are transported across the m e m b r a n e , t h e n r e c o n v e r t e d to g a s m o l e c u l e s a t t h e o t h e r side. By applying a reversible c u r r e n t to t h e e l e c t r o d e s , to transport the ions across the m e m b r a n e a c c o r d i n g to t h e d i r e c t i o n of t h e c u r r e n t , t h e g a s c a n b e p u m p e d from o n e c h a m b e r to t h e other. A diaphragm inside another linked gas-tight housing moves a c c o r d i n g to t h e q u a n t i t y of h y d r o g e n t r a n s f e r r e d from, or r e m o v e d to, t h e m e m b r a n e chamber. A controller uses sensed pressure in controlling the magnitude and direction of the electric current which is the m o t i v e force.
