Located near Diisseldorf, the manufacturing plant of Dynetek Europe GmbH has received Tm approval for two types of cylinders for onboard storage of compressed natural gas (CNG) to IS0 11439:2000 and for hydrogen to ISOXD 15869-4:2001. The approval provides certification fbr the manufacture and sale of cylinders for bus, truck and car applications in the European market. The subsidiary is also working towards ECE RI 10 (Economic Commission for Europe) certification for these cylinders. This standard, currently in its second draft, will cover all components for on-board storage of CNG for vehicles for the European market.

Canadian-based Fuel Cell Technologies has been chosen by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) in California to supply 10 fuel cell power systems to the first California clean air demonstration of fuel cells for homes. FCT’s SOFC systems will power 10 homes in southern Caligomia, providing each with 5 kW of electricity and ample heat for hot water requirements. The contracting has yet to be completed, but in general terms FCT will coordinate a contribution that totals about $616; 000 from a variety of sources such as local contractors, federal and state incentives, and itself. The AQMD is contributing $350 000 from an air poflution settlement and some $16 000 from its Clean Fuels Fund. Installation is expected to begin in fall 2002, with the demonstration to continue for about a year.

The technique uses an oxidation-reduction reaction involving iron to convert water vapor into hydrogen, This process notma& proceeds very slowly unless carried out at very high pressure and temperature. The research group solved this by adding titanium, vanadium, chromium, aluminum and gallium to the iron, which allowed the reaction to be carried out at 300°C
