the second sound regime. The theory applies equally well to metals but thermal conduction and specific heat depend in varying degrees upon phonon and electron processes respectively according to absolute temperature. In the attenuation of an acoustic wave’electron viscosity is dominant. Close agreement with Pippard’s theoretical expressions is obtained. Biology and medicine Echo-sounding circuit Atlas-Werke Aktiengesellschaft, British Patent 1, 139,494 (8 January 1969) An echo-sounding circuit designed to produce a high signal-to-noise ratio is described. Acoustic pulses are transmitted in a narrow frequency band and these are reflected by the substrata of the sea-bed. The reflected signals are compared with a constant-frequency signal in such a way as to limit interference, and the apparatus is claimed to be simple and unlikely to break down. (1431)
